Base Training + Cyber Monday Deals

To be honest, I’m struggling a little with my running right now. After nearly two months since the marathon, I STILL don’t feel like my legs are coming around. I’m try to be patient, but I don’t remember recovery taking this long in the past. It also doesn’t help that it has been really cold this month, and it is back to running on the snow and ice every morning, which is never fun.

Let’s hope this next month won’t be quite as cold. (Most mornings have been below 20 degrees F and often below 10 degrees F as well.)

The good news is that I hit 40 miles this week, which I was happy about. Right now I am doing a lot of base training with one treadmill workout a week. I’ll be happy to maintain mileage in the 40s or 50s–and maybe even a little in the low-60s this winter.

Here’s a recap of my workouts from November 20 – 26, 2017.

Monday

6 miles, easy

This was a nice easy run in the early morning hours.

Tuesday

6 miles – treadmill interval workout

5 x 1/2 mile

I’ve been trying to go to the treadmill once a week to do a faster, more uptempo workout. I did 5 x 0.5 mile @ 6:53 pace, which felt SO hard! That’s really sad since I just ran a marathon at a 6:57 pace two months ago! I had to stop and get off the treadmill after each interval in order to catch my breath!

Wednesday

Off

Thursday

9 miles, Turkey Trot 5K

I ran the Turkey Trot with Craig and pushed Cullen in the stroller. I ran an average pace of 9:32, so I didn’t try to race it. I had to stop several times for Cullen to change boots, readjust the blanket, and listen to what he was trying to tell me. He got really cold (The temperature was 10*F.), so he wasn’t too happy during the last mile. It was still fun, but I think I’ll have to avoid pushing Cullen in the stroller if it is below 20*F. I ran 6 miles back home before going over to my in-law’s for Thanksgiving. All the miles felt good.

Friday

5 miles, easy

Another easy run in the dark, cold morning hours before working on Black Friday. There was hardly anyone out, which was nice.

Saturday

14 miles, long run

I ran 10 miles with my friend Mandy, and then finished 4 more on my own. My average pace for this run was 8:11, which is about a minute faster than I usually run! It is nice for me to push the pace every once in a while, but my hamstrings are still sore and tight two days later. The good news is that my hip didn’t bother me afterwards like it did after last week’s 13 miles.

Sunday

Off

Total: 40 miles

I am really happy to hit 40 miles. Usually that kind of mileage is nothing, but these frigid temps make it so much harder to get out each day!

Black Friday Deals – 2017

I hope everyone had a blessed Thanksgiving yesterday!

Craig, Cullen, and I ran the Turkey Trot 5K together. I wasn’t feeling up to racing, and this is one of the few times we could all run together, so why not! It was bitter cold, but we still had fun. After the race, I ran 6 miles back home for a total of 9 for the day.

apntag.anq.push(function() {

apntag.showTag(‘ga_os_11946830’);

});

apntag.anq.push(function() {

Afterwards we had a Thanksgiving meal at my in-law’s, played Apples to Apples, and then FaceTimed with my family in Minnesota.

If you are involved with retail, you know the importance of this weekend. If you are a consumer, you know the great deals that every.single.store is offering. I am a part of both, so in some ways I am feeling overwhelmed with the weekend because I am working at the store Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, but I also want to do all the shopping! Because holy cow–there are so many good deals out there!

These are some of my favorite stores and some awesome deals that you don’t want to miss out on.

Rabbit

Rabbit running is a fairly new running clothing company, but they make some really nice pieces of running clothing. Today only they are offering 30% off everything with the code GIVETHANKS. I have their Catch Me If You Can shorts, which are really comfortable.

Nordstrom

Over the last few months, I have been doing A LOT more shopping online at Nordstrom. You can’t beat their free shipping and free returns! And that’s free shipping on ANY amount–even to Alaska, which isn’t the case for a lot of stores.

Here are some items that are on sale that either I own or have on my own wish list.

!function(d,s,id){

var e, p = /^http:/.test(d.location) ? ‘http’ : ‘https’;

if(!d.getElementById(id)) {

e = d.createElement(s);

e.id = id;

e.src = p + ‘://widgets.rewardstyle.com/js/shopthepost.js’;

d.body.appendChild(e);

}

if(typeof window.__stp === ‘object’) if(d.readyState === ‘complete’) {

window.__stp.init();

}

}(document, ‘script’, ‘shopthepost-script’);

Beautycounter

If you have been thinking about trying Beautycounter, this is your chance to snag some killer deals.

Here are the two items that are worth adding to your cleansing and makeup routine:

Cleansing Balm ($38 US)

The mini Cleansing Balm (one of our best sellers) is great for cleansing, removing makeup, and a way to add moisture to your dry, winter skin. The regular-sized Cleansing Balm is $80, so this is a great chance to try an amazing product at a lower price-point.

Lash Power Duo ($20 US)

This package includes a mini volumizing mascara and travel-sized eye makeup remover. The reformulated mascara is awesome, and I have heard nothing but amazing things about the makeup remover as well.

In addition, you get FREE SHIPPING on orders over $100 through Sunday.

And with a purchase over $250, you get a FREE Beautycounter+ Spa Set ($88 value) through Sunday as well.

Holiday Preview at the 5th Avenue Mall

Just a little over one month until Christmas, people!

The holiday bug is biting me earlier than usual this year. I’ve held off on listening to Christmas music or decorating my house with holiday decor, but I have already been buying gifts, which is one of my favorite things to do during the holiday season.

apntag.anq.push(function() {

apntag.showTag(‘ga_os_11946830’);

});

I especially got excited about gift-giving after attending a blogger event at the 5th Avenue Mall in downtown Anchorage last week.

apntag.anq.push(function() {

apntag.showTag(‘ga_11946829’);

});

Five of us bloggers were invited to a holiday preview at the mall. We started with appetizers at Sullivan’s Steakhouse. I had never been to Sullivan’s before–and to be honest I’ve heard mixed reviews about the restaurant, but I have to say I was very impressed. The inside was modern, the hostesses and waiters were very friendly, and the food was really good! I would definitely go back for a full meal in the future.

After introductions and a run-down of the night, we headed to Nordstrom to see some of the hottest gifts they have to offer this holiday season.

There was so much cute stuff; I wanted it all. Some of the top gifts include:

Cashmere sweaters (like this one from Halogen that is on sale for less than $70!)

Ugg boots

Bose portable speaker

Dinosaur Rug (Cullen would love this!)

Bogs boots

Kate Spade tote (want!)

Free People Sweater (I am currently lusting after this too. AND it’s 40% off in 3 colors!)

Our next stop was Sephora, which I frequent a few times a year, but did you know they have free classes they offer?! Everything from applying makeup to fake eyelashes. I did not that, and now I really want to take one or two. The gal said they offer free mini makeovers and a full makeover with a $50 purchase. Plus they are willing to give you samples of products you may be interested in. For holiday gifts, you can’t go wrong with their sampler boxes that contains the store’s best sellers.

Then it was off to Michael Kors to learn about the new smartwatches from Michael Kors, handbags, and dresses, which I didn’t realize he designed so many different items. This dress was on display at the store and would definitely turn heads if you needed a stand-out dress for your NYE party! I had no idea Michael Kors has smart watches. This rose gold one caught my eye.

Our last stop of the evening was at Bath & Body Works. I was happy to see that Bath & Body Works is starting to incorporate more all-natural ingredients into their products with their essential oils and soy-based oils in their candles. They are a one-stop shop with items for kids, guys, and wrapping items as well. (I have to admit I went back the next day to buy a few items.)

It was a really fun night and a chance to meet other bloggers, spend time with friends, and get out of the house on a weekday night!

Thanks to Ashlee from the 5th Avenue Mall for inviting me and the incredible swag bags from each of the retailers.

Here are the other bloggers who attended:

Things I’m Loving Lately

It has been far too long since I’ve talked about thing things I’m crushing on lately. I’ve included everything from a really delicious Instant Pot recipe to the cutest winter boot wedge to a couple things I’m putting on my Christmas wish list.

Sarah Marie Design Studio Sweatshirt

apntag.anq.push(function() {

apntag.showTag(‘ga_os_11946830’);

});

How fun is this sweatshirt?! I’ve seen a lot of pieces from Sarah Marie Design Studio floating around on my social media feed, and when I saw this sweatshirt, I knew it had to be mine. She has a TON of fun running-related sweatshirts, tops, mugs, and things that would make awesome gifts!

apntag.anq.push(function() {

apntag.showTag(‘ga_11946829’);

});

Instant Pot Chicken Pho

This surpassed all of my expectations! I can’t believe I forgot to share this phenomenal recipe with you guys. This Instant Pot Chicken Pho is so-so-so good! This is the Instant Pot I have, and I have made everything from salmon to Minestrone Soup to rice in it.

Sorel Lea Wedge

I know I’ve mentioned these booties before, but I recently ordered them in a second color, which should show you how obsessed I am with them! (I rarely have two of the same thing.) They are so great for the winter because they are waterproof, grippy on the bottom, and incredibly comfortable! I can’t recommend these enough!

Long Cradigan

I tried on several long cardigans like this, and this one was by far the best. I love the cut, the material, and especially how warm it is! I’ve already worn it twice this week! Ha!

Perfect Pumpkin Granola

I am a sucker for the pretty packages of granola at the store, but then every time I try them, I’m always disappointed. And really, it doesn’t take very long to make granola at home. This Favorite Pumpkin Granola took me about 20-30 minutes to prepare and 30 minutes to bake.

Patagnoia Quilt Pullover

This Patagonia Quilt Pullover has actually on my wish list for a while now. It looks so soft and cozy, and I love my other Patagonia pullover.

Arc’Teryx Patera Parka

It is sad how many jackets you need in order to live in Alaska. I used to make fun of my husband for how many jackets he owns, but now I am turning into him. It is hard because you need winter jackets, summer jackets, spring/fall jackets, nice jackets, jacket you can play in, etc. I am also putting this Arc’Teryx jacket on my wish list because it is really warm but not quite as bulky as my The North Face Jacket.

Cullen and I are going on a stroller run now. I’m sure it will be slow-going trying to push the stroller through new snow we got this morning, but ya gotta do what ya gotta do!

Weekend Highlights

We had a little extended weekend as Craig was off for Veteran’s Day on Friday.

I got up early that morning at 6:00 a.m. and cleaned the house because I hadn’t done it the night before (which is usually not the case). Craig and Cullen woke up around 8:30 a.m., and then I went for a run in the daylight! I just did an easy 5 miles around my neighborhood. (Side note: I’ve been running in this same neighborhood for 10 years, but I’m not sick of my routes. I actually prefer to know a route because it goes by a lot faster than a new route.)

I’ve had problems with my watching dying on cold runs. The battery was 40% charged, and it still died. Has anyone else had this problem?

When I got back, Craig went to the gym while I got ready for the day. We went to the coffee shop and hung out while Cullen played with the toys. (It is one of his favorite places to go and thing to do.)

Afterwards we went to Cabela’s because Craig had a gift card to use from his birthday. (It is impressive he waited an entire week to use it.) Cullen insisted on bringing in Mr. Moose with him, which is actually a stuffed decor item with a metal rod through it, so not snuggly like a regular stuffed animal would be.

We also made a stop at Skinny Raven because on your days off from work, don’t you want to spend them at your place of employment? Ha! I guess that goes to show you how much I love my job–and the people I work with!

When we got back home, we hung out, I made the Recovery Quinoa Salad from Run Fast Eat Slow cookbook, and had dinner. I also cleaned up the house (again), did some laundry, and was in bed by 9:45 p.m.

Saturday morning I did a long-ish run of 11 miles. I ran from my house, to my friend Kelly’s house, ran 5 miles with her, and then ran back home. It is a great way to break up a run! I wasn’t sure if I would be able to run 11 miles, or if I would have to cut it short since last week’s 9 miler went okay but not great.

With the snow we got last weekend, I am being reminded how much more fatigued my legs get running on snow and ice. Every day leaves my legs–especially hamstrings and glutes–feeling sore like I just lifted weights. Of course at the beginning of every winter I forget this.

The rest of Saturday was spent working. Sunday morning I did some blog and Beautycounter work before Craig and Cullen woke up. Then we got ready, went to church, and then I worked all afternoon, came home, cleaned the house (Do you see a pattern?), and the day flew by without a picture!

I hope you had a great weekend and have a wonderful week!

Brooks Launch – Shoe Review

If you have been following along for a while, you know how much I love the Brooks Launch.  I have been wearing the Launches for a couple of years now, and while there are other shoes I like, these are my go-to for everything: easy runs, tempo workouts, track days, etc. I love how versatile they are, how well they fit my foot, and they are the perfect amount of shoe for me–not too much and too bulky, but not so little that it feels like I’m running in a ballet flat.

Here are a few quick stats on the shoes.

Brooks Launch

Weight: 7.5oz.

Heel-to-toe drop: 10mm

Support: Neutral

Generations: currently on the 4th edition, the 5th edition is slated to come out next year, and I’ve heard it is a good one!

I’ve owned the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation and love them all. Each edition has had updates done to it, but I haven’t noticed that much of a difference between the generations.

Pros:

  • Good if you have a wider foot. (The Launch does not come in a wide, but it is great for my foot that is wider but not a true wide.)
  • Lightweight, less shoe, ability to “feel the ground more”
  • Reasonable price-point for a really good running shoe at $100
  • Responsive yet not too cushioned that I don’t feel like my energy is being wasted in the shoe
  • Fun colors
  • Snug heel cup (I often don’t like a particular shoe because of the heel cup, but this is so snug on my heel, and is the perfect fit for me.)

Cons:

  • Since it is a lighter weight shoe, it won’t have as much cushion as say the Brooks Ghost or Brooks Glycerin
  • The one complaint I’ve heard from two friends is that the heel cup dug into their heel funny and caused them to get blisters. I’ve personally never had this problem, but I did think it was odd that two friends (my coach, Nichole, and my friend, Teri from A Foodie Stays Fit) both said the same thing happen to them.
  • Lifespan is only about 300-400 miles. Since this is a lighter weight shoe, it will break down more quickly.

You can say I’ve become a little bit of a shoe snob since working at a running store, but it has been nice because I am able to try on a ton of different running shoes and dial in what works for me!

If you are interested in trying a pair of the Brooks Launch for yourself, they are on sale right now for $75 + free shipping! There are a lot of color options and still a full size run in everything! Be cautioned that the Launches are a neutral shoe, so if you pronate when you run, this shoe may not provide enough support for your foot.

Happy running!!
