Why are Parabens so Bad?

Since starting with Beautycounter as a consultant, I’ve been learning so much about all the different toxic chemicals in our health and beauty products. I haven’t eliminated every single un-safe product for a safer option yet, but as I use up products, I am replacing them with a safer option.

Once you start paying attention to the labels and ingredient lists, it is crazy how many unpronounceable and unrecognizable things there are in our food, health, beauty, and cleaning products.

Parabens are one ingredient that we hear a lot about, so I’m going to highlight this one first. What are parabens? Why are they potentially bad? Why does Beautycounter ban them from their products?

What are parabens?

Parabens are added to health and beauty products such as deodorant, toothpaste, and make-ups to stop the growth of bacteria, fungus, and other microbs. They have been used since the 1950s and are very inexpensive to add to products.

Look for these parabens on your ingredient’s list: methylparaben, ethylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben and isobutylparaben.

Why are parabens so bad?

Parabens have a estrogen-like property that is absorbed through the skin. Estrogen is a hormone in the body that causes breast cells to multiply and divide. Since parabens are absorbed into our bodies, the worry is that they could cause estrogen hormones to multiply and divide even more thereby leading to breast cancer. The correlation hasn’t been proven, but over many years of using these products, we don’t know how it will affect our bodies.

Why does Beautycounter ban them from their products?

Even though parabens haven’t been directly linked to cancer, there is the potential with use over time they could be harmful to our bodies, and Beautycounter doesn’t mess around with any potentially-harmful ingredients. They have banned 1500 ingredients from their products because they are not taking their chances on questionable ingredients. All of Beautycounter’s products are independently tested by a third-party for any of these harmful ingredients.

A couple of new product lines Beautycounter recently released that I wanted to highlight:

A few months ago, Beautycounter released their Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion, and it sold out within 24 hours! Then they restocked the product, and it sold out again! I finally got my hands on a bottle last month, and I now understand all the hype!

The Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion is designed to adapt to your skin and add moisture is areas that are dry and not add moisture in areas that are oily. I’ve always had combination skin, so this is perfect for me. For once, at the end of the day, my skin is not glistening with oil!

Just this past week, Beautycounter released the remainder of this collection:

Intense Moisture Serum

Eye Rescue Cream

Adaptive Moisture Lotion

Recovery Sleeping Cream

Holiday Collection

I won’t decorate for Christmas until after Thanksgiving, and I can’t listen to Christmas music until then either, but I will start thinking about gifts I want to give and buy for others. (It’s one of my favorite things about the holidayspicking out that perfect gift for each person.)

I know I will be giving Beautycounter to some of my friends and family because I want them to experience how amazing the products are and that you don’t have to compromise the safety of your products for sub-par performance.

There are many gifts that can be split into individual gifts, and almost all of the gifts are valued higher than what they actually cost, so it’s a win-win for everyone.

Here are some of my favorites:

Multi-Masker Set The 3 masks (Brightening, Plumping, Balancing) together in one set that could easily be divided into 3 individual gifts. $68 (value $105)

Winter Jewels Palette This palette has all the make-up you need to feel ready for the day: eyeshadow, eyeliner, and highlighters. It is a limited edition palette, so don’t wait. $58

Better Baby Care Set This would be an awesome gift for a baby shower as well! $58

Clean Slat Charcoal Duo For the man in your life, you could buy him this gift package with the best-seller charcoal bar + charcoal mask, which I am definitely going to be ordering this month. $48

Glow and Go Mini Oils For $28 you can buy all 3 facial oils to see which one you like the best. I love my No. 3 Balancing Facial Oil, but I would love to try the others as well.
